This year the Office of the State Fire Marshal changed the number of emergency preparedness and crisis drills school districts have to practice: 4 fire drills, 3 tornado drills, and 9 crisis drills. So far, South Breeze Elementary students have practiced a fire drill.

Next week Ms. Bohling will be reading the book, I'm Not Scared...I'm Prepared Because I Know All About ALICE to all students at South Breeze in their grade level groups. The book was read to all South Breeze students last year so many of the students are familiar with it. It will be read in sections and after each section, one of the three ALICE drills will be informally practiced. (Lock-In, Barricade, Counter) There will not be an announcement (ALICE, ALICE, ALICE) made over the intercom, but students will return to their classrooms to practice the drill.

Ms. Bohling will offer a parent meeting about the drills for any parent who did not attend the parent meeting last year, kindergarten parents, or any parent who is interested in coming. (It is not a mandatory meeting.) This meeting will be conducted on Monday, September 24 @ 6:00 pm in the South Breeze Elementary Library.

Providing a safe, secure learning environment for students is one of our highest priorities.  This is why USD 373 has implemented the use of ALICE (i.e. alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate).  ALICE training has become a requirement of staff who are employed by USD 373. Our USD 373 staff have been trained to understand that ALICE is not a step-by-step response, but rather a set of options to utilize in the event of a violent intruder.

You can read more about ALICE by going to www.alicetraining.com.

In July 2018, the State of Kansas/State Fire Marshall modified the number of Fire, Tornado, and Crisis drills that schools will need to have throughout the school year.  (four Fire, three Tornado, nine Crisis).  Students and staff will be trained periodically throughout the school year on various Crisis protocols.  Per safety concerns with the new State regulations, Emergency Preparedness Drill notification may only be sent out five minutes prior to these drills/events taking place.

All required/recommended vaccines can reduce the disease burden in school-aged children, thus helping to assure that students will be in school ready to learn. Completely immunized school-aged children are vital in protecting other more vulnerable populations from the devastating effects of the diseases that immunizations can prevent. Proof of receiving the immunizations must be provided to the school prior to attending the first day of school.

Kansas law requires that all students, eight and under, who are enrolling in a Kansas school for the first time present health assessment information. The assessment needs to have been conducted within the last 12 months before school entry.

Immunization requirements and an assessment form are available at usd373-ks.schoolloop.com/immunization-requirements.

As an alternative to the above requirements a pupil shall present: (1) An annual written statement signed by a licensed physician stating the physical condition of the child to be such that the tests or inoculations would seriously endanger the life or health of the child, or (2) A written statement signed by one parent or guardian that the child is an adherent of a religious denomination whose religious teachings are opposed to such tests or inoculations.

Immunizations and health assessments are available at the Harvey County Health Department by appointment throughout the year. Appointments can be made by calling 283-1637. Upon request, services will be offered on a sliding fee schedule based on income and number of persons in the family.

“Did you know that missing even two days per month puts students at significant increased risk of academic failure and eventual dropout. This includes excused and unexcused absences, and it is true for students across all grade levels, from K up to 12. We need to work together—schools, families, and community members— to make sure all our kids get to school on time every day...”
